Alcohol use depresses the nerves that control involuntary actions such as breathing and the gag reflex (which prevents choking); a fatal dose of alcohol may eventually stop these functions.
Studies have shown that alcohol beverage warning labels have increased awareness of the risks involved with alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Over time however, the alcohol warning labels have become commonplace, with the message often being overlooked.
A recent study compared the brain scans of teens who consume alcohol heavily with the scans of teens that don't. The study found damaged nerve tissue in the brains of the teens that drank. This damage negatively affects attention span in boys, and girls' ability to comprehend and interpret visual information.
Students attending schools with high rates of binge drinking experience a higher occurrence of secondhand effects such as disruption of sleep or study; property damage; and verbal, physical, or sexual violence than those attending schools with low rates of binge drinking.
