Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases, neurological impairments and social problems. These include but are not limited to: Cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon, and breast. In general, the risk of cancer increases with increasing amounts of alcohol.
While some people with alcohol dependence can cut back or stop drinking without help, most are only able to do so temporarily unless they get treatment.
The rates of disapproval and perceived risk for binge drinking are higher in the lower grades than in 12th grade.
Loved ones should make plans to talk to the alcoholic shortly after an alcohol related problem has occurred; an example of this would be speaking to an alcohol dependent person that has been arrested for driving while intoxicated-- it is important, if at all possible, for the individual to be sober prior to this intervention.
