Babies born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome have: smaller heads and brains, some degree of mental retardation, poor coordination, hyperactivity and abnormal facial features.
Between November 2005 and August 2006, over 8,000 students who presented as new patients to the health service at a large public university were screened for high-risk drinking, and almost 2500 students (28%) screened positive on the 5/4 gender-specific high-risk drinking question; high risk drinking is considered five or more drinks per occasion for men and four or more for women.
According to a recent sleep study at the University of Harvard, alcohol consumption within several hours of bedtime appeared to disrupt sleep and cause a person to awaken several hours into the sleep process and have problems returning to sleep without difficulty; this sleep disruption can lead to daytime fatigue and drowsiness.
Alcohol is a depressant that affects the central nervous system; alcohol abuse can worsen existing conditions such as depression or induce new problems such as serious memory loss, depression, or anxiety.
