Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. These immediate effects are most often the result of binge drinking and include the following: Alcohol poisoning, a medical emergency that results from high blood alcohol levels that suppress the central nervous system and can cause loss of consciousness, low blood pressure and body temperature, coma, respiratory depression, or death.
Approximately one in four children is part of a family experiencing alcoholism, addiction, or alcohol abuse.
According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), alcohol is the drug that is used most often by high school seniors; although they cannot legally purchase alcohol, over 90% of them have tried it and almost on third of them have reported that they have had more than five drinks at one time within the past month.
An alcoholic "drink" is generally defined as a 12 oz. beer or wine cooler, a 5 oz. glass of wine, or 1.5 oz. of 80 proof spirits (straight or in a mixed drink).
