A study that was conducted by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has reported that for every dollar spent on treatment of alcohol dependence, seven health care dollars are saved.
Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases, neurological impairments and social problems. These include but are not limited to: Cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon, and breast. In general, the risk of cancer increases with increasing amounts of alcohol.
Four of every five children and teen arrestees in state juvenile justice systems are under the influence of alcohol or drugs while committing their crimes, test positive for drugs, are arrested for committing an alcohol or drug offense, admit having substance abuse and addiction problems, or share some combination of these issues.
As of 1990, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans have stated that women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not consume alcohol.
