  • A study that was conducted by the Harvard School of Public health during 2002 reported that college aged women who drink alcohol are 50% more likely to have unplanned sex or to be the victim of a sexual assault.
  • New brain scan research shows that alcohol affects decision-making and judgment by reducing activity in the frontal lobes, where such functions reside; it appears that prior alcohol induced impaired function of these same brain areas leads to alcohol dependence, making it almost impossible for the person to exert conscious will over whether they can stop drinking or not in the absence of treatment.
  • Alcohol in moderation has been known to increase digestion, but this may be due to its relaxing effect; in higher "doses", alcohol can cause inflammation of the stomach lining, which is one of the primary reasons that an individual may experience heartburn and nausea the day after a bout with binge drinking.
  • In a single year, 522 children under age 14 were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, 113 of which were under 10 years of age.
