  • Risks for alcoholism is not destiny; proof of this is that many children of alcoholic parents have not developed alcoholism, and many people with no family history have become alcohol dependent.
  • Young adults with serious alcohol problems may not be as likely to choose becoming married or having a child, and these milestones may not affect their drinking behavior to the same extent that they affect people with less problematic drinking practices.
  • "It totally mellows me out to smoke a little weed after I throw back a few beers." REALITY: Mixing drugs--including drugs like alcohol and marijuana--has what scientists call an "additive effect." This means you'll feel the intoxication from both. So don't kid yourself into thinking you'll have a few drinks and then "mellow out" by smoking pot. Sure, you may feel mellow, but what you really are is wasted.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption and drinking problems among White women are most common in younger age groups.
