  • An estimated 3 million violent crimes occur each year in which victims perceive the offender to have been consuming alcohol at the time of the offense.
  • According to a national survey, 70% of alcohol binge drinking episodes involve adults age 26 years and older.
  • Alcohol is made as plant sugars in fruits come into contact with a fungus called yeast and they begin to ferment; as they rot, they will excrete a toxic substance called ethanol or ethyl alcohol--or simply alcohol. In the fermentation process, the yeast continues to feed on the plant sugars, thus the alcohol concentration levels rise; once these levels get closer to 14 percent, the yeast dies, quite literally, of alcohol poisoning.
  • Alcohol in moderation has been known to increase digestion, but this may be due to its relaxing effect; in higher "doses", alcohol can cause inflammation of the stomach lining, which is one of the primary reasons that an individual may experience heartburn and nausea the day after a bout with binge drinking.
