Scientists now believe that certain factors in a person's environment influence whether a person with a genetic risk for alcoholism ever develops the health problem. A person's risk for developing alcoholism can increase based on the person's environment, including where and how he or she lives; family, friends, and culture; peer pressure; and even how easy it is to get alcohol.
A recent report stated that adolescents who reported that they consumed alcohol heavily were four times more likely to commit theft outside the home than non-drinking adolescents.
Facts on Tap was launched during 1998, and is an alcohol prevention initiative designed to educate and inform students about alcohol abuse and to combat binge drinking on college campuses; this government sponsored program reaches out directly to students across the country and provides awareness materials, technical assistance, and training to more than 800 colleges nationwide.
