  • Alcohol consumption can play a role in causing depression; the irony of this is that many people drink alcohol in an effort to alleviate their low mood. The higher the amount of alcohol that is consumed, the greater the number of symptoms of depression. However, symptoms of depression have been reported to decrease dramatically or disappear completely alcohol abstinence.
  • Individuals that struggle with alcoholism need professional treatment and a degree of empathy from others; scientific research by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has clearly shown that punishment does not reduce alcoholic drinking, except with drinkers, who still have some measure of control over their drinking.
  • A hangover is caused partly by the body's being poisoned by alcohol and partly by the body's reaction to withdrawal from alcohol.
  • Women who drink more than one alcoholic drink per day have increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, violence, suicide, and certain types of cancer.
